Important Update – Happenings November and December

THE FMHA “Museum Happenings” is published monthly to keep you up-to-date on Happenings at the Fort Miles Museum. This blog focuses on NOVEMBER and DECEMBER and, as noted, the blog will be updated monthly (or more frequently, as needed) thereafter. The blog will also in-clude information about other scheduled events at Cape Henlopen State Park.

In November, the Fort Miles Museum event and tour schedule will be continue to be an active one and then operate on a limited basis during December.

Open House in honor of Veterans Day

Just Announced! FMHA will host an Open House in honor of Veterans Day on Saturday, November 11th. The Open House, featuring tours of Battery 519, will be held from 10AM – 3PM. TOURS WILL BE FREE OF CHARGE TO ALL VETERANS! Commencing at 10AM tours will be offered by both FMHA originating at Battery 519 and by Delaware State Parks (at 11AM and 2PM) originating from the Fort Miles Orientation Building.

Team Effort Brings Authentic World War II Aircraft Warning Service Spotter Shed to Fort Miles

On October 11 2017 an authentic Aircraft Warning Service (“AWS”) spotter shed arrived at Fort Miles on a flatbed truck generously donated to FMHA by Coastal Towing of Lewes. This newest artifact obtained for the Fort Miles Museum was donated to the Museum by the Simmons family of Cambridge, MD.

The AWS shed was transported from its original location on Hoppers Island. Thousands of these sheds were placed along the East Coast during and manned 24 hours each day during the period 1942-1944 in an effort to spot German aircraft that might threaten the United States mainland. WRDE Report: Major improvements coming to Fort Miles

(LEWES, Del.) – On Monday night some gathered at the Lewes Public Library to see the upgrades that will be made at Fort Miles Museum at the Cape Henlopen State Park.Dr. Gary Wray is the president of the Fort Miles Historical Association and has been working many years to improve Fort Miles.

“Quite frankly what we are offering is an improved road system.a new parking lot, because we need more parking in Cape Henlopen state park and a new outdoor venue that we will add on to our fort miles museum where we can offer wedding and reunions,” said Dr. Wray.

FMHA BUNKER BUSTERS “GOT BUSY” THIS SUMMER

FMHA BUNKER BUSTERS “GOT BUSY” THIS SUMMER.  The FMHA Bunker Busters completed a number of projects this summer, while progressing others such as continuing to change out the doors and windows in the World War II barracks lining the entrance to the Fort Miles Museum and Historical Area.  To track these (pretty amazing) accomplishments, please click on the following:

SEPTEMBER 2ND – VJ DAY AT FORT MILES

On September 2nd FMHA will present “In remembrance of VJ Day” at the Fort Miles Museum.
The ceremony and speakers will commence at 11AM at the “Big Gun” pad located at the top of the Museum’s Artillery Park.

The ceremony will honor Horace Knowles, who was stationed at Fort Miles with the 261st Coastal Artillery from 1940 – 1944, Jack Bolin, who was a tireless and hard working FMHA “Bunker Buster” and Robert Saupees, who was present at the surrender ceremony that took place on the USS Missouri on September 2 1945. GOVERNOR CARNEY VISITS FORT MILES

On May 22nd, as part of his tour of Cape Henlopen State Park, Governor John Carney toured Battery 519, along with Delaware’s new Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Control, Shawn Garvin. The Governor’s tour was hosted by Ray Bivens, Director of the Division of Parks and Recreation, and Dr Gary Wray, President of FMHA. This photograph features Governor Carney, Secretary Garvin, Director Bivens and their FMHA hosts in the South Gun Room of Battery 519.

FMHA THANKS EAGLE SCOUT CANDIDATE JOHN MADER

Scout John Mader from Troop 903 in Dover presented his Eagle Scout Project Gift to FMHA President Gary Wray on March 19, 2017 during the March FMHA Board Meeting. John’s Project consisted of the construction of display boards for Battery 519’s powder and shell rooms, as well as the construction of 4 rest benches for visitor comfort.

Scout Mader’s Eagle Scout project was a year long effort, consisting of project definition, fund raising, and leading a team peers during the construction phase. It was our pleasure to sponsor this young man in his quest to become an Eagle Scout.

DANIEL B LYONS III (1931 – 2016)

imageFMHA was saddened by the death of Dan Lyons, a long standing and energetic Member of the FMHA Board.

Dan passed away peacefully at home on November 5 2016. Dan’s interest in Fort Miles stemmed from his service in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Transportation Officer. Following his military service, Dan had a long and successful career in the transportation and logistics industry.

On May 14, 2016, John Schroeder cut the ribbon to the new Fort Miles art gallery, as Brax Hudson to his right, and sister, Carole and brother Rob watched.
